Multilingua: Immigrants study the Estonian language with great diligence
According to director of Multilingua Language Center Malle Nei, studying the Estonian language is very popular among foreigners moving to Estonia and such popularity demonstrates impressive growth dynamics. Estonian language courses are attended by people from all over the world. Courses on the basis of the English language are in special demand – regardless of nationality of students.
“Immigrants are diligent students since they consider language proficiency necessary to understand local life,” says director of Multilingua Language Center Malle Nei. “On the one hand, there is a trend for Estonians leaving the country to forget or neglect their mother tongue and integrate into a foreign environment. This is understandable. It is certainly possible to live in several cultural environments and speak several languages, while in order to achieve it one should study and achieve immersion in such language and cultural environment”.
“The Estonian language courses based on the English language are especially popular, while courses on the basis of the Russian language are also well-liked,” says Malle Nei. “People from many countries come to Estonia to study or work – or are brought here by love. The reasons may differ but our experience shows that Estonia is quite popular as a new place to call home – nobody is going to study Estonian language just for the sake of it. To undertake such studies one needs a clear vision for a reasonably long period of time”.
“Estonian language courses on the basis of the Russian language find another kind of target audience: successful managers with business interests in Estonia who wish to understand the Estonian language,” explains Ly Leedu, an Estonian language teacher in Multilingua Language Center. “Such students prefer individual lessons. They study the language for several months and very intensively – sometimes taking 30 hours per month or even more. It is a very effective form of study and generally quickly helps to start speaking the Estonian language”.
“We assume that a language is a communication tool – for people attending our courses it is important to be able to communicate in Estonian”, says Ly Leedu. “People brought to Estonia by love often face the choice: either to forego deep interaction with family and friends of their loved ones or to learn some Estonian. Their interest is deep and is not only limited to the language: we discuss culture and traditions that can help them to better understand the language”.
Multilingua Language Center (www.multilingua.ee) is established in 1994 and offers 15 languages and 8 different forms of study. The Language Center was founded to offer an option of studying different languages in Tallinn with help of a communicative method then new in Estonia – that is to learn spoken language and obtain good communication skills.
